Statistics reveal that land transport is responsible for more than three quarters of the emissions by the transport sector worldwide. Consequently, this sector is considered to be one of the most important sectors to be focused on with regards to measures aimed at mitigating climate change, which was agreed by regional and international organizations. This study includes a presentation on energy consumption in the transport sector in general and in the ESCWA region in particular, and its implications on the environment and climate change.

ESCWA, in collaboration with American University of Beirut (AUB), will be organizing a session on “Appropriate Renewable Energy Technologies for Developing Arab Rural Areas”, on 26 November 2014 within context of activities under the second international conference “RE in Developing Countries – REDEC”, 26 – 27 November 2014, Order of Lebanese Engineers premises, Beirut, Lebanon (website: www.redeconf.org).

The NENA LWD is organized by FAO-RNE and will focus on reviewing the progress made in addressing water scarcity in the region, fostering exchange of knowledge and experience among countries and partners and charting the way forward taking into account the lessons learned, the new challenges to and opportunities for sustainable development. 

The LWDs will consist of two segments: The technical and high level expert meeting from 31 March-3 April and the Ministerial Meeting on 4 April led by the League of Arab States.
