A training workshop on a Trade Impact Analysis Toolkit was recently organized by the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) to facilitate the exchange of best practices and experiences on quantitative tools used in trade policy analysis.

Held at the Hotel Gefinor Rotana in Beirut on 8 and 9 May, the workshop welcomed 20 participants from various Arab regional organizations including the League of Arab States (LAS), the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), and representatives from a number of ESCWA member States.
 
“The workshop aimed to build the capacity of participants to use quantitative trade tools and understand the economic impact of trade policy changes and reforms,” said Mohamed Chemingui, the Chief of the Regional Integration Section at ESCWA.

“Based on participants’ recommendations, ESCWA will host a second workshop on how to design simulations and draw analyses and results from such tools,” he added.

Mr. Chemingui said this will be useful to raise awareness about some of the tools ESCWA is developing on trade issues and the Arab Customs Union, particularly for countries such as Lebanon, Tunisia, Egypt, Sudan, and Palestine.

ESCWA will also soon be sharing a manual on the trade impact analysis toolkit, which will provide guidelines on the usage and design of these types of models for trade policy analysis.
