In his first public appearance since his appointment as Executive Secretary of ESCWA Mohamed Ali Alhakim pondered on the ordeals of displacement and migration that have had an impact on more than ten million people across the Arab region. According to him, these ordeals have a negative impact on environmental challenges just as they are affected by them. Moreover, they have aggravated the lack of balance in the distribution of populations and jeopardised economic, social, and ecological situations in many countries. |

Homogeneous analyses of the Arab region tend to portray it as a group of natural resource rich middle- and high-income countries, ignoring the fact that six Arab countries - Comoros, Djibouti, Mauritania, Sudan, Somalia and Yemen - are LDCs. The objective of this work is to provide a brief overview of the main progress and challenges in the area of productive capacity in the LDCs that are member states of ESCWA: Mauritania, Sudan and Yemen. |

ESCWA Seeks Promoting South-South Technology Transfer Cooperation |
Beirut, 25 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) —ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) opened today an expert group meeting on “Promotion of South-South Cooperation in Technology Transfer”. The meeting is organized in collaboration with the Federation of Chambers of Commerce, Industry and Agriculture in Lebanon (FCCIAL), and held at the Chamber of Beirut. Speakers at the opening session included Director of ETC Fouad Mrad and Director General of the Industrial Research Institute in Lebanon Bassam Frenn. |

Abu Dhabi Hosts UN-ESCWA Forum on Energy |
UN-ESCWA is organizing the “Arab Regional Forum on Energy for Sustainable Development: Strategies, Policies and Plans”, which will be held in cooperation with the Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, the CAMRE Technical Secretariat and UNEP/ROWA at the Hilton Hotel, Abu Dhabi, on 1 February, following the International Conference on Integrated Sustainable Energy Resources in Arid Regions, held between 28 and 31 January 2007. |
