Negotiations and Dispute Resolution |
UN-ESCWA, in partnership with the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources of Germany (BGR) and in collaboration with the Ministry of Water Resources in Iraq, is organizing an Advanced-Level Seminar on “Negotiations and Dispute Resolution Over International Shared Water Resources in Iraq.” The meeting will take place on 29-31 July 2008 at the UN-House in Beirut, Lebanon. The objectives of this meeting are to encourage a comprehensive vision and strategy for international negotiations on shared water resources. |

Despite progress on a number of human development indicators in ESCWA countries in recent decades, inequality, vulnerability and social exclusion have not decreased and the link between economic growth and social development remains weak. In many ESCWA countries, certain social groups such as persons with disabilities, informal workers and the poor often lack adequate protection and remain highly vulnerable, especially in times of conflict and crises. |

The National Conference on Integrated Social Policy in Egypt opened today at the Pyramisa Hotel in Cairo under the auspices of the Egyptian First Lady, Ms. Suzan Mubarak. Guide on the Application of the Sustainable Livelihoods Approach in the ESCWA Region |
This guide promotes the adoption and integration of the Sustainable Livelihood Approach (SLA) and helps improve and develop the well-being of the population in the ESCWA region. This approach is divided into four steps: analysis of the situation, design and selection of relevant strategies, implementation, and follow-up of adjustment. Moreover, the guide highlights the need to build appropriate capacity in order to facilitate the adoption and integration of the SLA through policies and programmes. |
