Arab Society: A compendium of Social Statistics, No. 11 |
Arab Society: A Compendium of Social Statistics is the latest in a series of biennial compendia of the Statistics Division of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA). Drawing on data provided mainly from national statistical offices, it focuses on issues of population, employment, housing conditions, education, health and culture. The eleventh issue of the Compendium pays special attention to education in ESCWA member countries. It presents education profiles for fourteen of the seventeen ESCWA member countries. |

Inventory of Shared Water Resources in Western Asia |
This publication is the first effort led by the United Nations to comprehensively identify and assess the state of transboundary surface and groundwater resources in the Western Asia. It was prepared by ESCWA and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) and was developed in close consultation with ESCWA member countries, as well as regional and international experts. |

Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the ESCWA Region, No. 13 |
The thirteenth issue of the Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the ESCWA Region disseminates data on population size and composition, and on vital events, namely fertility, mortality, marriage and divorce in ESCWA member countries for the period 2000-2009. Data were drawn from different national sources including surveys, censuses and civil registration systems and were compiled mainly from questionnaires prepared by ESCWA and filled by member countries. For accuracy purposes, data have been checked for reliability. |

Bulletin on Population and Vital Statistics in the ESCWA Region, No. 12 |
This issue disseminates population census data and comparable national data on registered vital events (births, deaths, marriages and divorces) in the ESCWA region, with complementary analysis. To optimize accuracy, data have been checked for consistency against national, regional and international sources and for comparability purposes, rates have been computed using the World Population Prospects: The 2008 Revision prepared by the United Nations Population Division. |

The study Prospects for South-South Cooperation in the ESWA Region reviews the current status of cooperation between ESCWA member countries and explores potential areas for future collaboration. The experience of countries in other developing regions has demonstrated that South-South cooperation has the potential to play an important role in the generation of employment, the alleviation of poverty and the attainment of inclusive, sustained economic development through technical assistance, knowledge exchange and technology transfer. |

Gender in the Millennium Development Goals |
This booklet represents the main outcome of the project "Toward more gender-responsive Millennium Development Goal (MDG) monitoring and reporting in the Arab region" that was implemented by the ESCWA in cooperation with United Nations agencies in the Arab region. The project aimed at forging a common understanding among stakeholders on ways to engender quantitative monitoring and reporting on the MDGs, particularly the identification of priority regional gender issues and the development of gender-sensitive measurements in Arab countries. |
