This report presents a comprehensive profile of social protection in Tunisia including pensions, healthcare, cash transfers, housing and food and energy subsidies. Social protection in Tunisia is well developed and it offers several forms of protection against social shocks through social insurance, social assistance programmes and social healthcare.

Building on this strong foundation, the social protection system could be improved to address further challenges following the uprisings of 2011. It could target inequalities in geographical coverage, strengthen governance and provide more comprehensive social insurance and unemployment benefits. Current steps towards a unified national registry will contribute to the expansion of social protection by enhancing targeting, coordination and efficiency.
