يحتوي هذا التعبير على عدة معاني وهي:
(1) مرادف للمعاينة المتعددة المراحل لأن الوحدات على المراحل العليا "معششة" في وحدات المراحل السفلى.
(2) يستعمل هذا التعبير كذلك عندما تكون بعض الوحدات مدرجة في الوحدات الأكبر التي تكون بدورها جزءًا من العينة الكاملة، مثلا: خطط القيد في العناقيد تكون معششة.
