Former SG Special Representative Urges the UN to Put Social Justice at the Heart of Political Debate |
“Is justice a condition for durable peace?” was the question raised today by Tarik Mitri, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General to Libya, in front of the heads of more than 20 UN agencies operating in the Arab region, representatives from the League of Arab States (LAS) and various embassies who were hosted at the UN House in Beirut by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) for the 20th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) meeting to discuss development priority agenda items. |

Bolster Food and Water Security in the Arab region |
On 11 December 2014, ESCWA and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) launched of a four-year project to bolster food and water security in the Arab region. SIDA has donated USD 2.7 million while the contribution of ESCWA will amount to USD 0.8 million. The project generates unique national and regional data on the present and future situation of food and water security; design coordinated regional policies to enhance food and water security; and help governments respond to dwindling arable lands and increased water scarcity, while meeting growing food needs. |

Launch of the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 Report From UN House in Beirut |
The World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 (WESP) Report discusses economic growth in many countries in Western Asia over the next two years and the repercussions of decreasing oil prices and ongoing conflicts. It also lays out the situation in Jordan, Lebanon and Yemen, notably concerning rising government debt which has started pressuring fiscal balances due to higher interest payments. |

The World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 Non-oil exporting experience weakened growth prospects |
Head of the ESCWA Development and Globalization Division (EDGD) Moctar Mohamed El Hacene today said that non-oil exporting countries in the region, especially Lebanon and Jordan, may experience weakened growth prospects, partially due to the negative repercussions of armed conflicts in neighboring countries. Al Hacene was speaking in the first press conference to be held after his assignment to ESCWA, and which was organized to launch the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 (WESP) report. |

Democratic Governance in Iraq on the Agenda of ESCWA |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will hold a workshop on 'Capacity-Building for Partnership in Democratic governance in Iraq' in partnership with the Iraqi Business Council (IBC) and in cooperation with the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Arab Gulf Fund for Development (AGFUND) from 23 to 25 January 2015, in the Grand Millennium Hotel, Amman. The opening of the workshop will be attended by Ambassador of Iraq to Jordan Jawad Hadi Abbas. |

Cairo Hosts Arab High Level Conference on Beijing+20: Towards Justice and Equality for Women in the Arab Region |
“Towards Justice and Equality for Women in the Arab Region” is the title of the Arab High Level Conference on Beijing+20, which will be held in Cairo on 2 and 3 February 2015 in Sofitel Hotel, El-Gezirah. The Conference is organized jointly by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the League of Arab States (LAS), and the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women). Other organizations are contributing to the funding of the event such as the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). |

تونس تستضيف المنتدى الدولي الخامس حول الطاقة في خدمة التنمية المستدامة |
تنظم اللجان الإقليمية الخمس التابعة للأمم المتحدة، وهي اللجنة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لغربي آسيا، ولجنة الأمم المتحدة الاقتصادية لأوروبا، واللجنة الاقتصادية والاجتماعية لآسيا والمحيط الهادئ، واللجنة الاقتصادية لأمريكا اللاتينية والكاريبي، واللجنة الاقتصادية لأفريقيا، بالتعاون مع الحكومة التونسية، "المنتدى الدولي الخامس حول الطاقة في خدمة التنمية المستدامة" من 4 إلى 7 تشرين الثاني/نوفمبر 2014 في مدينة حمامات، تونس. ومن المفترض أن يوقّع الأمناء التنفيذيون لهذه اللجان إعلاناً موحداً يعيد التأكيد على أدوار الأطراف المعنية في تعزيز سياسات الطاقة المستدامة. |

برعاية وزير البيئة اللبناني محمد المشنوق، تعقد كلّ من الإسكوا ومركز أي. بي. تي للطاقة ووزارة الطاقة اللبنانية وبرنامج الأمم المتحدة الإنمائي مؤتمراً حول "تلوّث الهواء في لبنان من جرّاء قطاع النقل البري: الواقع والحلول"، وذلك في تمام الساعة 9:30 صباحاً من يوم الخميس 13 تشرين الثاني/ نوفمبر 2014، في بيت الأمم المتحدة، ساحة رياض الصلح، بيروت. يتخلّل جلسة الافتتاح كلمات لكلّ من الوزير المشنوق، والمديرة العامة لوزارة الطاقة السيدة أورور فغالي، ورئيس مركز أي. بي. تي للطاقة طوني عيسى، ومديرة إدارة التنمية المستدامة والإنتاجية في الإسكوا السيدة رلى مجدلاني. |
