Beirut, 29 October 2010 (UN Information Service) — ESCWA, in close collaboration with the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and the Arab Institute for Training and Research in Statistics (AITRS), is organizing the first coordinators’ workshop on “Measuring Wellbeing and Progress of Arab Societies” from 1 to 5 November 2010, at the UN House in Beirut.

Beirut, 11 November 2010 (UN Information Service) — Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, Deputy Secretary-general of the United Nations Asha-Rose Migiro and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf today opened at the UN House in Beirut the 14th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) meeting for UN agencies operating in Arab countries.

Beirut, 12 November 2010 (UN Information Service) — ESCWA Friday concluded its 14th Regional Coordination Mechanism (RCM) meeting for all UN agencies operating in the Arab region, which was held at the UN House in Beirut 11-12 November. The meeting, which was attended by regional directors and officials of UN agencies and offices, was inaugurated by Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri, UN Deputy Secretary General Asha-Rose Migiro, ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf, and League of Arab States (LAS) Assistant Secretary-General for Social Affairs Sima Bahous.

As is customary since 1993, the United Nations celebrated World Water Day on 22 March. In Lebanon, ESCWA marked the day through a seminar held at the UN House in Beirut under the theme: “Water for Cities: Responding to the Urban Challenge.” Lebanese Minister of Water and Energy Gebran Bassil gave patronage to the event, which was co-organized by the Association of the Friends of Ibrahim Abdel Al (AFIAL) and the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR).
