Transport Issues Debated in ESCWA |
Transport officials today affirmed the importance of unifying transport legislation among Arab countries and removing obstacles to the movement of goods and people in this region. Officials were speaking at the 11th Session of the ESCWA Transport Committee, held under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transportation, Ghazi Aridi. |

ESCWA Concludes Transport Committee with Calls to Harmonize Legislation |
ESCWA Transport Committee adopted today the proposal for the formation of a working group on the harmonization of institutional frameworks and legislation in the transport sector in the ESCWA region. Transport officials of ESCWA’s 14 member countries adopted this proposal at the 11th Session of the ESCWA Transport Committee, which was held on 22-24 March under the auspices of Lebanese Minister of Transportation, Ghazi Aridi. |

ESCWA Report Highlights Disparities in Information and Communication Technology |
ESCWA shed light in a report it launched Tuesday on the state of the Information Society in the Arab region, emphasizing the great disparities that exist among countries in the region in this sector. Entitled “Regional Profile of the Information Society in Western Asia – 2009”, the report disclosed an increase in literacy in this region, while also noting that half of all Arab women still suffer from illiteracy. |

Opening of ESCWA 26th Session Jordan Chosen as chair, UAE and Bahrain as Vice-chair and Syria Rapporteur |
United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia opened this morning the senior officials segment of its 26th Session at the UN House, Beirut. The Session’s Ministerial segment will be held this Wednesday under the auspices of Lebanese Speaker Nabih Berri. As is the custom at the beginning of every Session, the chairmanship is assumed by one of the member countries. By virtue of this rule, Jordan was chosen as chair for the two coming years, while United Arab Emirates and Bahrain were selected as vice-chair, and Syria as rapporteur. |

In addition to the statement of Berri, the opening of the Session featured statements by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, delivered on his behalf by ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader AlDafa, who read ESCWA’s statement well. |

Concluding its Ministerial Session, ESCWA Urges Continued Efforts for Region's Peace and Stability |
At the end of its 26th Ministerial Session, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia Thursday (ESCWA) called on its member countries to continue working towards peace and stability in the region and tackling the roots of crises within their socio-economic development programs. The Session was held from 17 to 20 May, with the participation of Arab ministers and officials, ESCWA experts and officials, and representatives of governmental and non-governmental organizations. |

Basil Fuleihan Institute, ESCWA Launch Public Finance Management Reference Guide |
Lebanese Minister of Finance Rayya Hassan and ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader AlDafa will open a regional workshop on “Public Finance Reform: A Roadmap for Modernization and Good Governance.” The workshop, co-organized by ESCWA and the Basil Fuleihan Institute (IOF), is scheduled to open at 15:00 on Monday 31 May 2010 at the Institute's premises in Beirut. The opening will witness the launch of a reference guide on ‘Best Practices in Public Finance Management’. |
