UNESCWA-GTZ Meeting on Regional Water Utilities Opens |
UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that by 2015, it is projected that 82 million people in the Arab world will lack access to safe water and 124 million people will not be able to get basic water treatment utilities if urgent measures are not taken to improve the present situation. Tallawy was speaking at the opening of a technical cooperation meeting held by UNESCWA and German Technical Cooperation (GTZ) at the Conrad Hotel, Cairo, from 4 to 6 September 2006 under the aegis of Egyptian Minister of Housing, Utilities and Urban Development Ahmed Al Maghraby. |

Ambassadors of UNESCWA Countries to Meet Thursday Discussions will focus on Commission’s Activities and Support to Lebanon |
In their first meeting after the end of war on Lebanon, the ambassadors of UNESCWA member countries will meet at 11am on Thursday 14 September 2006 at the UN House, Beirut. This meeting comes within the context of the regular Advisory Committee Meetings and is the second for this year. UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will open the meeting with a statement addressed to the participants and media representatives. |

Abu Dhabi to Host UNESCWA Meeting on the Development of Arab Capital Markets |
UNESCWA is organizing its second annual Expert Group Meeting (EGM) on Financing for Development entitled “The Role of Capital Markets in the Economic Development of the ESCWA Member Countries” from 19 to 20 September 2006 at “Le Royal Meridien” hotel in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. This meeting comes within the framework of UNESCWA efforts to assist member countries in the implementation of the recommendations of the International Conference on Financing for Development (Monterrey, March 2002). |

In collaboration with the Middle East and North Africa Regional Office of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the United Nations Development Group Office (UNDGO), UNESCWA is organizing a regional training workshop on “DevInfo v5.0” in Cairo from 18 to 22 September 2006. Iraqi Human Rights Minister Visits UNESCWA Tomorrow |
Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy will receive Iraqi Minister for Human Rights Wijdan Michael at 12 noon on 29 September at the UN House, Beirut. Discussions are expected to cover cooperation between UNESCWA and the Ministry for Human Rights in Iraq. |

Iraqi Minister for Human Rights Wijdan Mikhail said today, “UNESCWA provides major support for her Ministry and the activities it intends to undertake.” She was speaking following her visit this afternoon to the UNESCWA headquarters in Riad el Solh Square, where she met with Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Antoine Mansour, head of UNESCWA’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI). |
