Training Workshop on Sand and Dust Storms in the Arab Region |
The objective of this training workshop organized by ESCWA and other partners is to enhance the technical capacities of operational and research meteorologists from Arab States on the analysis, prediction and projection of sand and dust storms, including the use of ground and satellite observations of dust, dust storm modelling and prediction, dust classification and data assimilation in dust models. |

Reviewing Arab Development Patterns, Creating Sustainable Development Bodies Urged |
Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions. |

The Digital Arabic Content Competitions for 2013 Open the Doors for Digital Products in Arabic |
ESCWA launched the digital Arabic content (DAC) competitions for 2013 between June and September in each of Palestine, Yemen and Lebanon under the slogan “Thinking digital? Let’s innovate in Arabic”. The competitions aimed at selecting the best and most innovative ideas in the field of DAC. They were launched in cooperation with the Palestine Information and Communication Technology Incubator (PICTI) in Palestine, the Science and Technology Centre at the University of Aden in Yemen, and Berytech in Lebanon. |

Competition and Regulation in the Arab Region, Economic Governance Series 2015, is a report by ESCWA, which tackles these essential components of economic systems at the national, regional and global levels. In Arab countries, however, heavily concentrated and inefficient economies, collusion, centralization of economic power among a few elites and general rent-seeking behaviour have aggravated challenges to the adoption and enforcement of competition and antitrust laws, thereby hindering the improvement of inefficient market structures and economic governance systems. |

Tallawy Says We Can Challenge and Succeed at Opening of Annual Arab Banking Conference |
UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy hoped the participation of Arab banks in the reconstruction of Lebanon would be one of the first to spark off this process. She commended the outstanding achievements of the Arab banks over the last few years within the national and regional economic sphere. Tallawy noted, “We have a significant example of this, namely the award given to Lebanese Central Bank Governor Riad Salameh. It shows we can rise to the challenge and succeed.” |

The meeting also features a round table discussion on Technology and the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in the Arab states.

Renewable Energy Discussed in Abu Dhabi |
UN-ESCWA participated in the “International Conference on Integrated Sustainable Energy Resources in Arid Regions” held in late January 2007 under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates. The conference aimed to shed light on the available applications for the management of sustainable energy resources and its techniques, and the development and integration of natural energy resources such as water, fossil fuel and renewable energies. |
