“Land has true value. Invest in it.” That is the theme of this year’s World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, marked annually on June 17th. The Arab region suffers from high levels of dryness, with the desertification of 70 to 80 percent of its land. Most of its countries rank below the poverty line in water resources with more than half of the Arab population facing severe water scarcity. Conference Diplomacy the Focus of UNITAR-UNESCWA Workshop |
Speaking at a training workshop on “Conference Diplomacy” today, UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that civil society organizations and the media are a basic factor impacting multilateral negotiations and the diplomacy of international and regional conferences. She said some countries are weakened by the fact that information is kept from civil society organizations and media at a time when these institutions can play an effective role in stating the position of nations on major issues that have a direct impact on the livelihood of peoples. |
