29 March 2021	Webinar on Lebanon’s policy regulatory reforms and financial and legal frameworks needed to promote small-scale renewable energy technologies and applications in rural areas	Within the framework of the “Regional Initiative for Promoting Small-Scale Renewable Energy Applications in Rural Areas of the Arab Region (REGEND)” Project, the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) is organizing a Webinar on “Case study on Lebanon’s policy regulatory reforms and financial and legal frameworks needed to promote small-scale renewable energy technologies and applications in rural areas”. The webinar will present and discuss Lebanon’s case study and provide guidelines to conceptualize REGEND’s policy toolkit as regional strategic guidelines to improve the enabling environment for the private sector and women entrepreneurs to invest in income-generating activities by increasing the use of small-scale RE technologies and applications in productive activities in the rural areas.

2 December 2019	ESCWA observes the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People	Beirut, 2 December 2019 (ESCWA)--The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) held a ceremony at the United Nations House on 29 November 2019 to observe the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. Mr. Claudio Cordone, Director of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) Affairs in Lebanon, participated in the ceremony.
11 December 2014	ESCWA Executive Secretary Bids Farewell to UN House Italy to Become Observer in ESCWA	Beirut, 30 September 2010 (UN Information Services) -- UN Undersecretary-General and Executive Secretary of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Bader AlDafa has left the Regional Commission’s quarters in Beirut this afternoon upon the completion of his mission. In the presence of all Directors of ESCWA Divisions and staff members, UN Security guards performed the traditional parade for AlDafa, as is the case in the farewells of all executive secretaries.

26 February 2015	Bolster Food and Water Security in the Arab region	On 11 December 2014, ESCWA and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) launched of a four-year project to bolster food and water security in the Arab region. SIDA has donated USD 2.7 million while the contribution of ESCWA will amount to USD 0.8 million. The project generates unique national and regional data on the present and future situation of food and water security; design coordinated regional policies to enhance food and water security; and help governments respond to dwindling arable lands and increased water scarcity, while meeting growing food needs.
29 July 2020	Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture in the Arab Region	The Workshop discussed the Koronivia Joint Work on Agriculture and provided a platform for sharing on regional perspectives and issues related to agriculture and climate change negotiations and highlighted the need for a joint Arab position for a resilient agriculture sector. KJWA represents the unique opportunity to put forward the agriculture sector in a convention that does not look into specific sectoral issues and could be a game changer for the many Arab farmers. LAS, FAO and ESCWA were ready to assist countries in preparing their submissions and joining the KJWA process.
11 December 2014	Reviewing Arab Development Patterns, Creating Sustainable Development Bodies Urged Arab Regional Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20 Calls for Civil Society Role in Development	Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions.
