Arab Parliaments Dialogue on the Regional Review of the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration in the Arab Region |
The Global Compact for Migration promotes broad multi-stakeholder partnerships to address migration in all its dimensions by including migrants, diasporas, local communities, civil society, academia, the private sector, parliamentarians, trade unions, national human rights institutions, the media and other relevant stakeholders in migration governance. It underscores the role of parliamentarians in implementing the Global Compact and to conduct regular and inclusive reviews of progress at the national level. |

On 25 February 2014, UN Undersecretary General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Rima Khalaf launched from Tunis a remarkable report entitled “Arab Integration: A 21st Century Development Imperative” with the participation of Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki, former Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati and a crowd of political, economic, intellectual and public figures. Media representatives who took part in the ceremony received a press kit, which we will re-publish over five parts, in view of the importance of the issues the Report addresses. |

ESCWA Launches Report on Israeli Practices Towards the Palestinian People and the Question of Apartheid |
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) Rima Khalaf pointed out today that it is not an easy matter for a United Nations entity to conclude that a State has established an apartheid regime. In recent years, some have labelled Israeli practices as racist, while others have warned that Israel risks becoming an apartheid State. A few have raised the question as to whether in fact it already has. |

According to the International Organization for Migration, by 2010, the world migrant population stock will have reached 214 million, meaning that one in every 35 people globally will be a migrant. Furthermore, a combination of current socio-economic and demographic trends is expected to further increase the scale of international migration. Any comprehensive response, aimed at managing the complexities of this situation, needs to be supported by reliable data. However, statistics on international migration in the ESCWA region are scarce and poorly circulated. |

Regional Workshop on Measuring SDG Indicators from Population and Housing Censuses and Civil Registration Data in Arab countries |
Global Programme in Support of the 2020 Round of Population and Housing Censuses and Civil Registration and Vital StatisticsUsing the technical report on “Measuring SDG Indicators through Population and Housing Censuses and Civil Registration Data” as a reference document, the workshop aims to discuss how to produce SDG indicators based on their metadata information. The workshop will also provide a platform to further elaborate on utilizing Population and Housing Censuses and Civil Registration Data for disaggregating SDG indicators and discuss the use of geospatial information and tools for generating relevant SDG indicators from such data. Ultimately the workshop will help to achieve a common and improved understanding of definitions and methods of computation of SDG indicators. |

UNESCWA and International Organization for Migration Sign Cooperation Agreement |
In parallel with the Economic and Social Council meetings taking place in Geneva this week, a ceremony was held to sign a cooperation agreement between the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The agreement was signed by Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy on behalf of UNESCWA, and by Director General Brunson McKinley on behalf of IOM. |
