Presentation of final results of the comprehensive baseline mapping study for the energy situation of the building sector in Tunisia |
The objective of this National Workshop is to present to the key actors in the building sector in Tunisia – in particular, the project’s National Task Force – the final results of the comprehensive baseline mapping study for the energy situation of the building sector in Tunisia. Members of the Project’s National Task Force, which include representatives of relevant public & private stakeholders for the considered branches of activities and other key actors in the building sector, will be solicited to help in validating these final results. The outputs of this mapping exercise shall constitute the basis for the remaining project activities and will help in defining the main axis and players for conducting the energy efficiency actions in the building sector in Tunisia. |

UN ESCWA, UN Women and WHO are jointly organizing this meeting to bring together relevant partners in the Arab region to discuss a way forward in advancing methods and strategies to measure violence against women (VAW) in line with globally agreed methodological and ethical standards, building on the outcomes of the meeting Measuring Sustainable Development Goals on Violence against Women and Time Use Statistics Indicators held in Tangier, Morocco in 2018. |

PALESTINIAN PEOPLE CONTINUES TO BEAR BRUNT OF OCCUPATION |
On 19 July 2013, ESCWA Director of the Emerging and Conflict-Related Issues Division Tarik Alami presented to the UN Economic and Social Council the Note of the Secretary-General on the economic and social repercussions of the Israeli occupation on the living conditions of the Palestinian people in the Occupied Palestinian Territory, including East Jerusalem, and the Arab population in the occupied Syrian Golan, which is prepared by ESCWA on yearly basis. |

Committee on Trade Policies |
The mandate of the Committee includes the following: (a) discussing priorities under the programme of work and midterm action plans of the Commission in the field of trade policies; (b) following up on progress in trade policies in member States and making recommendations in that regard; (c) monitoring developments in regional and international forums, conferences and processes with regard to trade policies, and coordinating regional efforts towards the implementation of related resolutions and recommendations emanating from such platforms; and (d) supporting cooperation between the secretariat of the Commission and specialized ministerial councils of the League of Arab States, and organizations and unions formed under its umbrella, and with other specialized regional organizations, to build capacity and harmonize policies and strategies to develop trade policies; and supporting communication efforts, partnerships and the harmonization of positions in the international arena. |

Promoting Science-Policy Interface in the Arab Region |
During the 3rd Session of the Arab Forum for Scientific Research and Sustainable Development, convened in Beirut from the 10th to 12th of December 2015, ESCWA Sustainable Development Policies Division organized a panel discussion on “The Science-policy Interface in the Arab Region,” which highlighted the importance of this evolving concept in light of the interlinked challenges facing the region and the world. |

Expert Group Meeting on Sustainable Land Management as a Best Practice to Enhance Rural Development in the ESCWA Region |
The ESCWA region has limited fertile land that is subject to different levels of degradation. With few exceptions, it is also considered a land scarce region. Land resources are being increasingly degraded and over-exploited. The degradation of agricultural land in the region to a large extent is caused by human induced factors, but natural factors such as, low and erratic rainfall and droughts are also playing a part. Land resources in the region are becoming increasingly scarce, and the quality of such resources is decreasing, mostly as a result of poor management. |
