The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) joined the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) in condemning in the strongest terms the shelling of the Jabalia Elementary Girls’ School on Wednesday, 30 July 2014. The targeted UNRWA-run school was a United Nations-designated shelter in Gaza and a safe haven for 3,300 civilians who had sought refuge there under the banner of the United Nations and international law. |

Regional Coordination Mechanism for Arab States, 23rd meeting |
The twenty-third RCM meeting comes two years after the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, at a time when Arab countries are facing complex and pressing domestic and transboundary regional challenges—such as peace and security, unemployment, environmental stability, youth, water and international migration. Those challenges could, but should not, affect the United Nation’s ability to act as “one” to ensure that the basic human rights, economic and social justice of citizens are protected, a priority for all countries in the region. |
