AlDafa Visits Hariri’s Tomb Tomorrow Tribute to the Man who Brought ESCWA Back to Beirut |
On the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the UN Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Bader AlDafa visits the tomb of late Prime Minister Rafic Hariri tomorrow Tuesday, 21 July 2009, at 11:30 AM. The visit is a tribute to the man who brought ESCWA’s headquarters back to Beirut, its official and permanent seat. The UN Information Service kindly requests news media to grant this visit the highlight it deserves. |

World Day to Combat Desertification |
The World Day to Combat Desertification is observed worldwide on 17 June every year. The focus in 2015 was the attainment of food security for all through sustainable food systems. This theme brought together two sustainable development goals, namely to end hunger and achieve food security (goal 2) and to protect terrestrial ecosystems (goal 15), which are very relevant for the Arab region; a dryland region facing mounting challenges, including food insecurity and the degradation of the natural resource base, notably soils. |

This policy brief discusses the central role of civic engagement and civil society in forging transitional justice mechanisms. Using international case studies, it outlines the general instruments of transitional justice and describes the role that civil society has played in this process. Case studies of different transitional justice programmes in Arab countries are provided, highlighting the different approaches adopted. |

Issue No. 26 of the National Accounts Studies of the ESCWA Region includes available data and ESCWA estimates of gross domestic product (GDP) at both current and constant prices, in addition to the consolidated national accounts for each ESCWA member country during the period 2001-2005, and the estimated real GDP growth for 2006. Change Management in Public Sector Reform in Iraq |
"Change Management in Public Sector Reform in Iraq" was the title of the capacity development workshop held by ESCWA in Istanbul, Turkey, from 20 to 28 April 2015. It was organized in collaboration with the Lebanese Institutes des Finances Basil Fuleihan within the framework of the Iraq Public Sector Modernization (IPSM) Programme of the UN Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) which has been supporting the public sector reform agenda of the country, such as decentralization, service delivery, and capacity development. |
