Contestants of Star Academy 2006 Cast Plea for Arab Youth |
Winner of the 2006 Star Academy Joseph Attieh will address a large audience made up of prominent political, diplomatic, media and cultural figures at the UNESCO Palace, Beirut, tomorrow. He will address his plea to Arab officials on behalf of his colleagues Hanaa El Idrissi (Morocco), Hani Hussein and Rakiya Ibrahim (Egypt), Joseph Attieh and Maya Nehme (Lebanon), Khalifa Salem (UAE), Fadi Andraos (Palestine), Chayma Hilaly and Wajdi Lakhal (Tunis). |

Environmental Standards and Competitiveness of Key Economic Sectors |
While some analysts consider environmental standards as a valuable mechanism for improving production efficiency, others argue that compliance with those standards is an additional and costly burden that affects competitiveness. This study examines the relationship between the two factors by assessing the scope of the impact of environmental standards on competitiveness, and provides examples from both sides of the debate. |

Land Degradation Assessment and Prevention: Selected Case Studies from the ESCWA Region |
Critical issues confronting policymakers, administrators, staff and stakeholders in combating and preventing land degradation are assessed in this review, with particular emphasis on determining the successful implementation of programmes. The causes and impact of land degradation are examined, the usefulness of programmes is judged and stakeholder participation is assessed. Case studies are presented from Egypt, Jordan, the Syrian Arab Republic and the United Arab Emirates and action-oriented recommendations on successful interventions are suggested. |
