At its eighth session, the Committee on Women aims to discuss the role of institutions in achieving gender equality, highlighting the following areas: Mainstreaming gender in public institutions, the role of institutions in responding to the Plan of Action on Women, Peace and Security in Times of War and in Times of Peace in the Arab Region; and the assessment of the economic cost of violence against women with a view to adopting institutional policies to put an end to this phenomenon. |

Death Registration Systems and Mortality Statistics in the Arab region |
The expert group meeting on death registration systems and mortality statistics in the Arab region was organized in support of a study under preparation by the Statistics Division of the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), in partnership with the Regional Office for the Eastern Mediterranean of the World Health Organization (WHO-EMRO). The study focuses on death registration systems and their associated mortality statistics in the Arab region. |

Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries |
Upon a request for support through Technical Cooperation from the League of Arab States (LAS), ESCWA jointly with the LAS conducted between 22 and 24 October 2013 a regional training workshop on “Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries” in Amman, Jordan. The workshop was hosted by the ESCWA Technology Centre at the facilities of the Jordanian Royal Scientific Society and attended by 16 participants from nine Member States. |
