The Environment in the Transboundary Context in the ESCWA Region: Situation and Recommendations |
Most ESCWA member countries have ratified international environmental agreements and have committed themselves to enhancing relevant governance structures, developing action plans and submitting reports on the state of the environment. The resulting sectoral approaches and fragmented policies have failed to define or address adequately the challenges that are specifically transboundary in nature. This study attempts to identify and tackle the major transboundary environmental threats in the ESCWA region. |

The seventh meeting of the Technical Committee will be held in the ESCWA Technology Centre, Amman, Jordan from 18-19 March 2013. The Committee starts its working sessions at 10.15 a.m. on Monday, 18 March 2013 with one session in the morning and two sessions in the afternoon. It resumes its work at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, 19 March 2013 with two sessions in the morning. The Committee concludes its proceedings at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, 19 March 2013. |

Social Development Bulletin, Impact of the Financial Crisis on International Migration in the Arab Region, Sixth Issue |
This bulletin reviews the impact of the global financial crisis on international migration from and to the Arab region. Starting with an overview of the crisis and the resulting challenges and opportunities for the region, it then reviews lessons learned regarding the impact of wars and previous financial crises on international migration. To this end, the bulletin sets out three cases: the 1973 oil crisis, the 1990-1991 Gulf war and the Asian financial crisis of the late 1990s. |

ESCWA Celebrates Its First Gender Equality Award |
The first ESCWA Award on Advancing Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women was presented by Ms. Rima Khalaf, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of ESCWA, to three staff members. The award is delivered for the first time and constitutes a milestone for ESCWA, which is adopting a holistic approach to mainstreaming gender perspectives in its plans, policies and programmes. |
