This issue presents data and statistical indicators on external trade in goods of ESCWA member countries. Data are presented in time series until 2007 and were drawn primarily from national sources, as well as from secondary sources where appropriate. ESCWA hopes that this issue of the External Trade Bulletin, which provides total and detailed data on intraregional and international trade of member countries, would be useful to policymakers, analysts, researchers and other users at the national, regional and international levels. This issue comprises three parts.

While international debate continues regarding the development of primary biofuels, second-generation biofuels derived from agricultural waste have emerged as an environmentally sound alternative for policymakers and entrepreneurs interested in biofuel development, including in the ESCWA region. Advocates indicate that developments in this sector can also help to address the environmental problems of the region, as well as to create new employment and income opportunities through the introduction of environmentally sound technologies.

This workshop aims to provide technical support and to build the capacity of Common External Tariff Committee Members in the trade negotiations of the Arab Customs Union.
