Assessing Arab Economic Integration: Trade in Services as a Driver of Growth and Development |
Economic integration is an important means to generate income and employment, to boost investment and to spur structural transformation toward more diversified and broad-based economic models. Services do not only satisfy domestic consumption and investment demands but are also exported and used as intermediate inputs and, through their vital impact on the productive efficiency of other sectors, services are a determining factor in a country’s participation in international production networks. Coupled with the fact that the services sector tend to account for rather large and growing shares of output, employment, and foreign direct investment, services remain a key area in deeper regional economic integration efforts to reap sizable socio-economic benefits. |

UN Backs Sustainable Tourism in South Lebanon |
Beirut, 29 March 2012 (UN Information Service) — The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and the Union of Tyre Region Municipalities held today a workshop in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre to raise awareness about responsible eco-tourism in the framework of green economy and sustainable development. Expert Group Meets on Gender Mainstreaming |
On 29 and 30 March 2011, ESCWA held an Expert Group Meeting on “Mainstreaming Gender in the Plans and Programmes of the Ministries of Labour in Selected ESCWA Member Countries” at the UN House in Beirut. The two-day meeting was a follow-up to a workshop on gender mainstreaming and organizational change for participants from labour ministries and national women machineries in six member countries - Bahrain, Kuwait, Lebanon, Palestine, Qatar, Sudan and Syria - that was organized in August 2010. |
