While international debate continues regarding the development of primary biofuels, second-generation biofuels derived from agricultural waste have emerged as an environmentally sound alternative for policymakers and entrepreneurs interested in biofuel development, including in the ESCWA region. Advocates indicate that developments in this sector can also help to address the environmental problems of the region, as well as to create new employment and income opportunities through the introduction of environmentally sound technologies. |

Illicit Financial Flows in the Arab Region |
Illicit financial flows (IFFs) are constantly evolving outpacing detection at every corner. IFFs undermine the rule of law, distort macro-economic stability, and raise severe security complications for the Arab region. These flows constitute substantial leakages to domestic public revenues that could have otherwise been harnessed to finance national and regional efforts devoted to achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. |

ESCWA Meets in Abu Dhabi on Traffic Casualty Reduction |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), is organizing a workshop in Abu Dhabi for "Setting Regional and National Road Traffic Casualty Reduction Targets in the ESCWA Region" on 16-17 June; The workshop will discuss strengthening national capacities of low and middle income countries to reduce road traffic casualties and the establishment of national committees for road safety. The meeting will also review the current statistics on road safety and developments in the field of road safety management in member countries. |
