On 15 June 2016, ESCWA and UNDESA organized a side event during the ninth session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP9) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD). The side event, which was co-sponsored by the Delegations of Costa Rica, Jordan, Morocco, Spain and Sweden, focused on national institutional frameworks for implementing and monitoring the Convention.

Interventions from panelists focused on a number of issues, including: the structure and role of national human rights institutions for the implementation of CRPD Article 33; the structure of national coordination mechanisms for the implementation of the Convention; the development of monitoring indicators to measure progress against CRPD provisions; and channels available for ensuring the participation of persons with disabilities and their representative organizations in the work of national CRPD institutions.
