ESCWA Executive Secretary Arrives in Beirut |
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim arrived this evening in Beirut to assume his responsibilities. He was received at the Rafik Hariri International Airport by Iraqi Ambassador to Lebanon Ali Al Ameri, ESCWA Deputy Executive Secretary Khawla Mattar, ESCWA Secretary Karim Khalil and a number of officials in the Commission. Before his appointment, Alhakim was the Permanent Representative and Ambassador of Iraq to the United Nations in New York since May 2013. |

The World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 Non-oil exporting experience weakened growth prospects |
Head of the ESCWA Development and Globalization Division (EDGD) Moctar Mohamed El Hacene today said that non-oil exporting countries in the region, especially Lebanon and Jordan, may experience weakened growth prospects, partially due to the negative repercussions of armed conflicts in neighboring countries. Al Hacene was speaking in the first press conference to be held after his assignment to ESCWA, and which was organized to launch the World Economic Situation and Prospects 2015 (WESP) report. |

Big Data for Good: Can Big Data Illustrate the Challenges Facing Syrian Refugees in Lebanon? |
In facing development challenges, policymakers and humanitarian aid practitioners rely on traditional data sources from official sources to inform their decisions with regards to both host communities as well as refugees. These sources can be costly, time-consuming and difficult to collect, particularly amidst a context susceptible to multiple crises. Also, they are infrequently updated, which can make the information they contain obsolete, especially within the highly volatile political and socioeconomic context of the Arab region. With the advent of the ‘Data Revolution’, we are currently surrounded by a wealth of information, known as “Big Data”. Vast amounts of data are examined in order to extract patterns and insights, and recommendations and solutions are then formulated accordingly. This pilot project explores the potential of unconventional data sources in informing policymakers of the conditions and vulnerabilities of Syrian refugees and Lebanese host communities. |

ESCWA discusses competencies of senior servants from the Agenda 2030 perspective |
Beirut-Cairo, 23 July 2019 (ESCWA)--On 15-17 July, ESCWA held in Cairo, Egypt, a regional workshop to discuss and approve “The Common Arab Regional Job Competencies Framework for Senior Public Servants from the Perspective of the Agenda 2030 and Public Policy”. Participants included senior civil servants from public institutions in 10 Arab countries mandated to lead administrative reform and support their countries national development. |

Competitiveness of the ICT Sector in the Arab Region: Innovation and Investment Imperatives |
Developing countries have often focused on venture capital to boost investment. Some Arab countries are proponents of that approach, launching many funds geared towards the promotion of investment in the ICT sector. While those initiatives are a step in the right direction, they cannot succeed without complementary measures. |

The two working groups are technically and financially supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH under the project Adaptation to Climate Change in the Water Sector in the MENA Region (ACCWaM), which supports RICCAR. |
