Strengthening Good Governance Practices in Conflict Afflicted Countries: Current Priorities and Future Interventions |
Good governance remains a critical ingredient for socio-economic development as well as for peacebuilding. In light of the development challenges facing Western Asia, in conflict affected countries in particular, the consecration of good governance practices is all the more pressing but continues to face a wide range of obstacles. The most serious challenges within the public sector remain the depletion of human resources and physical infrastructure as well as the desperate need to upgrade and develop outdated administrative practices. |

Creativity, Innovation and Competitiveness on the Agenda of ESCWA |
The Amman based ESCWA Technology Centre participated in organizing the “Arab Conference for Creativity, Innovation and Competitiveness,” held by the Arab Industrial Development and Mining Organization (AIDMO) and the Central Metallurgical Research and Development Institute (CMRDI) on 24 and 25 May 2016 in Cairo. ESCWA Technology Centre’s National Officer Nael AlMulki delivered a keynote address in the opening of the Conference and participated as rapporteur in the third working session. |

Beirut, 31 May 2018 (Communication and Information Unit)--The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) today announced it will hold its 30th Ministerial Session in Beirut, Lebanon on 27 and 28 June with a focus on technology for sustainable development. “We are proud to welcome the Ministerial Session back to Beirut this year, as the last one organized in Lebanon was in 2012,” said Mohamed Ali Alhakim, the Executive Secretary of ESCWA. |

Monitoring the transition to a green economy in the Arab region: The SME perspective |
During the United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20), the international community has refined the definition of the green economy to make it more balanced, flexible and effective. In this new approach, green economy is defined by local, national and regional needs and priorities rather than being a top-down economic model. Thus, there is no single interpretation of the green economy, but rather various green economies. |

Workshop on Development of Gender Indicators in the Arab Countries |
The UNESCWA is holding its regional workshop on the Development of Gender Indicators in the Arab Countries, from 1-3 April, 2014, in Istanbul, Turkey.
The meeting is directed at middle and high level experts on gender statistics from the national statistical offices and women machineries/planning ministry.
