ESCWA Annual Report, 2011 |
The year 2011 was a turning point for the Arab world. The power of citizens has created new momentum for change, opening the door of opportunity for the Arab people. As an institution that provides regional public goods, ESCWA had to transform its approach to development. In this regard, ESCWA has started preparatory work in earnest to launch three key flagship publications that will chart out, in cooperation with intellectuals and researchers in the region, alternative development trajectories. |

ICT at the Service of Education, Healthcare and Agriculture |
On 31 May and 1 June 2016, Amman hosted “The 3rd International Workshop on Applications of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) in Education, Healthcare and Agriculture”, which was held at the Royal Scientific Society (RSS), the largest applied research institution Jordan. The Workshop was jointly organized by ESCWA, the Commission on Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in the South (COMSATS), the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO), the Inter-Islamic Network on Information Technology (INIT), in cooperation with RSS. |

UN Backs Sustainable Tourism in South Lebanon |
Beirut, 29 March 2012 (UN Information Service) — The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA), the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), and the Union of Tyre Region Municipalities held today a workshop in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre to raise awareness about responsible eco-tourism in the framework of green economy and sustainable development. Participants included representatives from different municipalities and local non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in southern Lebanon. |

Rethinking Fiscal Policy for the Arab Region |
The report on “Rethinking Fiscal Policy in the Arab Region” asks whether or not current fiscal policies in the Arab region are up to the task of the 2030 Agenda and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. It finds that the answer is mostly no—at least not yet. Many countries are lagging behind in connecting fiscal policy and development aims. |

The United Nations five Regional Commissions (ECA, ECE, ECLAC, ESCAP and ESCWA) conducted, in 2019, the third Global Survey on Digital and Sustainable Trade Facilitation (formerly the Global Survey on Trade Facilitation and Paperless Trade Implementation) to collect relevant data and information from their respective Member States on the implementation of the WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement and other related measures. |

Regional Profile of the Information Society in Western Asia, 2011 |
The information society, in which information is processed efficiently, including the production, exchange, adaptation and use of information, is the appropriate environment for achieving sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. However, the move towards the information society constitutes a real challenge to developing countries, particularly in view of the expanding digital divide with developed countries, thus rendering them increasingly vulnerable to reduction in their productive and economic capacities. |
