Gender Statistics |
Gender statistics inform policy and programme decisions, and are critical for effective monitoring and analyses of gender gains and gaps. The need and demand for gender statistics at the national, regional and global level for systematic mainstreaming of a gender perspective within national statistical systems and in the production of gender statistics remain unmet in many areas. |

UNESCWA and International Organization for Migration Sign Cooperation Agreement |
In parallel with the Economic and Social Council meetings taking place in Geneva this week, a ceremony was held to sign a cooperation agreement between the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) and the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The agreement was signed by Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy on behalf of UNESCWA, and by Director General Brunson McKinley on behalf of IOM. |

Comparative Analysis of Civil Society Participation in Public Policy Formulation in Selected Arab Countries |
In the past decade, civil society organizations in the Arab region have achieved significant improvements in performance and capacity to request change with respect to certain issues. However, that improvement was neutralized by an improvement in the capacity of the authorities to contain the voices of civil society and deprive its organizations of the human capacity necessary for their survival, by appointing their leaders and activists to ministerial, administrative and diplomatic posts, thereby dissuading them from claiming the integration of civil society demands into public policy. |

On 17 November 2016, ESCWA and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on the sidelines of the twenty-second session of the annual Conference of the Parties (COP 22), the supreme decision-making body of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change taking place in Marrakech, Morocco between 7 and 18 November 2016. |
