Strengthening Good Governance Practices in Conflict Afflicted Countries: Current Priorities and Future Interventions |
Good governance remains a critical ingredient for socio-economic development as well as for peacebuilding. In light of the development challenges facing Western Asia, in conflict affected countries in particular, the consecration of good governance practices is all the more pressing but continues to face a wide range of obstacles. The most serious challenges within the public sector remain the depletion of human resources and physical infrastructure as well as the desperate need to upgrade and develop outdated administrative practices. |

Civil Registration in Refugee Settings: Advancing Assessment and Improvement in Unsettled Environments |
This technical meeting seeks to bring together a small group of professionals to discuss conceptual and technical issues associated with the assessment of vital registration processes and data for Syrian refugees in Jordan and Lebanon. The purpose of this meeting is to identify conceptual/definitional issues and measurement challenges associated with vital registration assessment of the Syrian refugee population in Jordan and Lebanon, and to develop a modest plan for initial pilot testing of different large-scale data collection approaches. |

– In collaboration with the UN Statistics Department, (UNSD), UN-ESCWA (Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia) is organizing a workshop on “Data Compilation and Application of Methodological Concepts”, at the Radisson SAS Hotel, Amman, Jordan between 28 October and 2 November 2007. The workshop, which will open on Sunday 28 October at 09:00 am, is geared towards updating the capabilities of officers in the implementation of the concepts and definitions in collecting, processing and disseminating international merchandize trade statistics. |
