UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that the Commission’s Unit for Conflict Related Issues (ECRI) was documenting the effects of the military operations on Lebanon in order to serve as a practical reference to any future work for rehabilitation and re-construction in the country. Tallawy was speaking this morning to the UN Information Services when she also underlined that the work program was ongoing as planned before the recent crisis has ravaged the country.

The increasing trend towards regional and international globalization is presenting the ESCWA region with several monetary and fiscal challenges. Given the low level of economic integration within the ESCWA region, this study examines the case for increased policy coordination and, ultimately, the adoption of a common single currency. To achieve this objective, this report assesses the relationship between trade intensity, economic structure and the degree of business cycle synchronization in the ESCWA region.

Under the auspices of HRH Princess Sumaya Bint El Hassan, President of ESCWA Technology Centre (ETC) Board of Governors, the Centre held on 13 November 2016, in Amman, an executive workshop for scientific research leaders in Arab countries, in cooperation with the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and The International School on Research Impact Assessment.

This paper will provide an overview of the short- and long-term impacts of conflict in the region and identify the interconnections and self-reinforcing cycles amongst these.
 
The paper will link this dire situation in many Arab States with implications for reaching the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. Coherent and well-financed development planning and policy implementation is vital to the success of the SDGs.
 
This paper aims to monitor the impact of conflict on the development of the Arab countries, and how these conflicts affect the successful implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
