Progress in Achievement of the Millennium Development Goals in the ESCWA Region: A Gender Lens |
Since their adoption in 2000, gender experts criticized the MDG for their failure to adequately include a gender component in their goals, targets and indicators. In addition to reducing gender equality to one goal, the target of goal 3 on promoting gender equality and empowering women, is limited to eliminating gender disparity in primary education, preferably by 2005, and all levels of education by 2015. |

Committee on Technology for Development, 1st session |
Thematic discussions include international and regional processes of ICT for Development (ICT4D), Digital Economy and Smart Societies, global and regional processes in Science, technology and Innovation for Development, the Innovation landscape in the Arab region, as well as ESCWA efforts in supporting Technology Transfer. The meeting also features a round table discussion on Technology and the implementation of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda in the Arab states.

Committee on Trade Policies |
The mandate of the Committee includes the following: (a) discussing priorities under the programme of work and midterm action plans of the Commission in the field of trade policies; (b) following up on progress in trade policies in member States and making recommendations in that regard; (c) monitoring developments in regional and international forums, conferences and processes with regard to trade policies, and coordinating regional efforts towards the implementation of related resolutions and recommendations emanating from such platforms; and (d) supporting cooperation between the secretariat of the Commission and specialized ministerial councils of the League of Arab States, and organizations and unions formed under its umbrella, and with other specialized regional organizations, to build capacity and harmonize policies and strategies to develop trade policies; and supporting communication efforts, partnerships and the harmonization of positions in the international arena. |

Lebanese Economy and Trade Minister to Open UNESCWA Meeting on Monday |
Lebanese Minister of Economy and Trade Sami Haddad will open the UNESCWA Regional Workshop on Trade Facilitation for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) at 10:00am on 6 November 2006 at the UN House, Beirut. Participants in the meeting, which will continue until 7 November, include representatives of small and medium size enterprises (SMEs) in the region. This activity focuses on trade facilitation for the private sector and is part of the work programme of UNESCWA. A regional workshop was held in the same framework last June for trade negotiators on trade facilitation. |

On 20 February 2017, ESCWA marked World Day of Social Justice with particular emphasis on the role of culture and arts in achieving social justice, and with the participation of a host of officials, diplomats, artists, and media figures. Opening remarks in the ceremony were delivered by Lebanese State Minister for Combating Corruption Nicolas Tueni and by Director of ESCWA Social Development Division Frederico Neto. |
