Regional Profile of the Information Society in the Arab Region - 2013 |
The information society, in which information is processed efficiently, including the production, exchange, adaptation, and use of information, is the appropriate environment for achieving sustainable development and enhancing the quality of life for all citizens. However, the move towards the information society constitutes a real challenge to developing countries, particularly in view of the expanding digital divide with developed countries, thus rendering them increasingly vulnerable to a reduction of their productive and economic capacities. |

Arab Group Meeting on Climate Change |
ESCWA in coordination with LAS and the Arab Negotiations Group on Climate Change organized the Arab Group meeting on 22 April 2020. The meeting was conducted within the activities of the project “Strengthened Arab Networks and Enabling Environment for Climate Action”. The meeting was attended by Ms. Roula Majdalani, Mr. Karim Khalil and Ms. Tarek Sadek. The meeting was attended by 48 Arab negotiators, ambassadors and climate experts and continued for three hours in a very interactive manner.
The meeting discussed the current status of CC global meetings and Arab position priorities on CC issues in light of the current circumstances of the Covid-19. Also assessment of the impacts of Covid-19 on implementation of Paris agreement, updating and submission of NDC’s, overview of status of virtual meetings and workshops related to the COP-26 and GCF board sessions and integrating climate change in new economic recovery plans by the countries were addressed. |

Workshop on Developing a Strategic Framework for Civil Registration and Vital Statistics Systems in Arab countries |
Civil registration and vital statistics play a key role in facilitating the monitoring of progress in the SDGs where they serve as a denominator for a wide range of demographic goals and indicators. These statistics are a source of continuous and up-to-date information on birth, death and population statistics. Arab countries have civil registration systems, but some are unable to produce vital statistics according to international standards and recommendations. |

As the United Nations enters its seventieth year, the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) embarks on its fifth decade of work in the Arab region. Our role at ESCWA, however challenging in these tragic times, is to keep the long-term goals of development, integration and social justice alive and to create a prosperous and just future for all. The region has been shaken to the core. The casualty toll continues to mount and millions have been displaced and exiled. |

Investing an additional USD 40 billion a year in the forestry sector could halve deforestation rates by 2030, increase tree planting by around 140 percent by 2050, and catalyze the creation of millions of new jobs. Those were among main findings of a report on forests produced by the UN Environment Program (UNEP) and launched today by the UN Communications Group in a press conference in Beirut on the occasion of World Environment Day 2011 (WED). |

Executive Secretary to Attend Sustainable Development Forum and Take Oath of Office |
United Nations Under-Secretary-General and ESCWA Executive Secretary Mohamed Ali Alhakim headed to New York to take part in the High Level Political Forum (HLPF) on Sustainable Development held between 10 and 19 July 2017 and other side-line events. Alhakim is also scheduled to meet a score of UN officials and the Arab Group at the level of the Permanent Representatives to the United Nations. |

UN-ESCWA Launches a Supportive Guide in the Arab Region on Gender in the Millennium Development Goals |
On the occasion of the 12th Regional Coordination Mechanism Meeting (RCM), UN-ESCWA Executive Secretary, Bader Omar AlDafa, launched on Sunday a report on “Gender in the Millennium Development Goals: Information guide for Arab Millennium Development Goals reports” at the UN House, Beirut in the presence of representatives of UN regional organizations and media institutions. |

Regional Expert Meeting on "National Digital Development Reviews - Review of Methodology and Guiding Template" |
Within the framework of the project on advancing digital cooperation and development Arab States Action Programme, ESCWA is organizing the Regional Expert Meeting on “National Digital Development Reviews – Review of the Methodology and Guiding Template”, via internet. The meeting will gather the Arab countries that participated in the first round of the National Digital Development Reviews (NDDRs) for 2019 and countries wishing to participate in the 2021 round. |
