Arab Forum "Towards a New Welfare Mix: Rethinking the Roles of the State, Market and Civil Society in the Provision of Basic Social Services" |
Provision of affordable and quality social services such as health, education and social protection is a key concern in Arab countries. Provision of these services has traditionally been considered as the domain of the State. However, this has been subject to change globally and in the Arab region. Increased privatization efforts and technical as well as regulatory innovations have enabled non-state actors to contribute to the provision of basic social services. Some countries in the region have deliberately designed policies to allow private participation in some social sectors. |

Workshop on MDG Monitoring |
Since the Millennium Summit in 2000, countries and international agencies have been compiling data to monitor progress towards the MDGs. The availability and quality of the data at the international and national levels is however not the same. The UN Statistical Commission has called attention to the need of reducing these discrepancies, and countries worldwide have pointed out the importance of assessing progress at sub-national levels and better explore national sources. |

Bolster Food and Water Security in the Arab region |
On 11 December 2014, ESCWA and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) launched of a four-year project to bolster food and water security in the Arab region. SIDA has donated USD 2.7 million while the contribution of ESCWA will amount to USD 0.8 million. The project generates unique national and regional data on the present and future situation of food and water security; design coordinated regional policies to enhance food and water security; and help governments respond to dwindling arable lands and increased water scarcity, while meeting growing food needs. |

ESCWA and LAS Workshop on the Outputs of the Arab IGF 2020 Initiative's Technical Cooperation Working Group |
ESCWA and the League of Arab States (LAS) will hold the Workshop on the Outputs of the AIGF2020 Initiative's Technical Cooperation Working Group (TCWG), in Cairo, from 20 to 22 December 2016. The event is hosted by both the UNIC Cairo office, and the League of Arab States. The Workshop opens at 12:00 hours noon on Tuesday 20 Dec 2016 at the UNIC-Cairo Office, and continues for the remaining two days at LAS premises, starting at 10:00 hours daily. |
