Food Security and Safety Discussed in Rio + 20 |
During the Rio+20 Conference, which took place in Rio de Janeiro on 20-22 June 2012, ESCWA joined hands with the German Agency of International Cooperation (GIZ), the League of Arab States (LAS), the Arab Forum for Environment and Development (AFED) and the Arab Network for Environment and Development (RAED), to evaluate food security in the Arab region, in a panel discussion that gathered around 50 participants. |

Launch of Decade of Action for Road Safety in ESCWA |
From the UN House in Beirut, and in cooperation with Lebanese actress Carmen Lebbos, ESCWA launched on 17 May the “Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020.” The event was held under the auspices and in the presence of Lebanese Minister of Interior Ziad Baroud, and many diplomats and government officials from ESCWA’s member countries. |

Using Internet Self-Enumeration in Population and Housing Censuses: Challenges, Opportunities and Best Practices |
The paper examines the development of smart applications to collect data using most of the devices used for the Internet, such as a laptop, tablets, smart phones, etc., through the contact and communication strategy for a successful use of those methods. The paper also addresses the importance to have available electronic methods for data protection by encrypting and protecting the data before sending it to a central database. Moreover, the paper concluded with a series of recommendations, the most important of which is that the use of this method to be incorporated in the census implementation methodology based on multiple sources of data. Finally, this paper is expected to contribute in assisting the Arab countries in making decisions regarding the use of the Internet in collecting census data. |

The International Comparison Program (ICP) is a global statistical initiative aimed at estimating purchasing power parities (PPPs) that are used to convert gross domestic product (GDP) and its components from national currency denominations into common international currency units at equal price. Today, the ICP has become not only the largest international statistical program in the world, but also the most complex, involving 199 countries worldwide. |
