The study presents four research papers on how Islamic finance should be handled in the System of National Accounts 2008 (2008 SNA) and monetary statistics based on discussion and research papers presented in the workshop organized by ESCWA and UNSD on  Islamic finance in national accounts. Research and best practices are needed beyond the financial assets and liabilities and their classification by type of financial instrument described within the framework of monetary and financial statistics, in line with the 2008 SNA.

The 2018 Annual Report provides an overview of key efforts by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) to support global, regional and national efforts towards a more stable and prosperous Arab region. It presents facts and figures about ESCWA, its mission, strategy and activities implemented in 2018.

In much of the Arab region, economic development is not guaranteeing social benefits. Poverty and unemployment continue to plague many countries, and basic social services, including health and education, are inequitable, inadequate or absent.
