Gender in the Millennium Development Goals |
This booklet represents the main outcome of the project "Toward more gender-responsive Millennium Development Goal (MDG) monitoring and reporting in the Arab region" that was implemented by the ESCWA in cooperation with United Nations agencies in the Arab region. The project aimed at forging a common understanding among stakeholders on ways to engender quantitative monitoring and reporting on the MDGs, particularly the identification of priority regional gender issues and the development of gender-sensitive measurements in Arab countries. |

Status of the Digital Arabic Content Industry in the Region |
The study consists of four sections and a preview, in which, an account of ESCWA contributions to the subject of digital Arabic content since 2003 is summarized. Section I deals with definition of the two major sectors which provide the feed for digitization: the media content and the creative sectors, with large portions of both sectors being digitized, or are available for digitization in the future. Section I also provides an overview of the global status of digital content. Section II addresses the economic aspects of the DAC market. |

The Effect of Governance on the Allocation of Expenditure and the Distribution of Revenue: Evidence from Selected Arab Countries |
This study uses analytical and quantitative analysis to examine the interdependence between government expenditure and government revenue from one side and governance indicators from the other in selected oil importers and exporters in the region. Among the questions we examine are the following; how does corruption, the rule of law, government effectiveness, accountability, regulatory quality and political stability affect expenditure on health, education, and social spending, tax revenue (direct and indirect) and non-tax revenue, among other things. |

Progress Made in the Doha Round Negotiations in Agriculture and the Impact on Market Access for the Agricultural Exports of Arab Countries |
With the exception of the countries of the Gulf subregion, the agricultural sector and agricultural exports are vital to Arab countries. This study reviews and analyses recent developments in the negotiations on agriculture within the framework of the Doha Round and of the World Trade Organization (WTO) agreement on agriculture and its implementation, including the elimination of trade barriers, market access and reduction of subsidies and tariffs. |

Population and Development Report, Issue No.4. Youth in the ESCWA Region: Situation Analysis and Implications for Development Policies |
The youth group in the ESCWA region faces numerous challenges, including poor quality of education, incompatibility of education system outputs with the labour market, high unemployment rates, unhealthy life styles and low participation in decision-making and public and political life. In that regard, ESCWA focuses its activities on the need to address youth as a socio-demographic group that should be targeted with special national policies. As part of those activities, ESCWA publishes the fourth issue of the Population and Development Report which contains three parts. |
