Over the past few years, many Arab countries have witnessed popular uprisings in which ordinary men and women have demanded freedom, social justice and dignity. Political transitions as a result of these uprisings have brought to the fore a number of short term challenges that will have a decisive impact on the long term prospects of these countries and the region as a whole. |

Road Safety of utmost importance in the Mashreq region: United Nations |
Delegates from across the Arab Mashreq will gather to discuss the establishment of a regional road safety partnership based on a proposal from the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN ESCWA), Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP) and Shell. Engaging citizens is an imperative for the post-2015 Development Agenda in the Arab region |
After an intensive discussion at the UN House, international and regional experts as well as senior government officials agreed that engaging citizens in attaining national development agendas is an imperative. Over 35 participants attended the meeting organized by UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) and ESCWA, from 3 to 6 December 2012, in Beirut. Taking cue from their governments at the Rio+20 Summit this June, the participants agreed on the importance of governance and the inclusion of socially vulnerable groups in achieving sustainable development. |

Preparation for the Sudan Housing and Population Census |
In the framework of the ESCWA technical cooperation with member countries, and at the request of the Republic of Sudan, the regional commission held on 1 and 2 June 2016 in Khartoum a consultative workshop on the use of technology for the general Population and Housing Census 2018, and relayed the experience of Jordan in the use of technology along the phases of the census. Participants in the census were the ESCWA delegation, along with a delegation from the Jordanian Department of Statistics and the firm that carried on the census in Jordan. |
