Op-ed: World Day to Combat Desertification: Daily Choices Can Save our Planet |
“Land has true value. Invest in it.” That is the theme of this year’s World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, marked annually on June 17th. The Arab region suffers from high levels of dryness, with the desertification of 70 to 80 percent of its land. Most of its countries rank below the poverty line in water resources with more than half of the Arab population facing severe water scarcity. To what extent can our daily choices support the future of our planet? |

ESCWA Launches 2011 Report on Information Society in Western Asia |
The Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) on 4 May said that countries with a low Gross National Income (GNI) spend on the information and communication services more than the developed ones, and that the Arab region comes in the second rank in terms of the cost of these services. |

Conference Diplomacy the Focus of UNITAR-UNESCWA Workshop |
Speaking at a training workshop on “Conference Diplomacy” today, UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy said that civil society organizations and the media are a basic factor impacting multilateral negotiations and the diplomacy of international and regional conferences. She said some countries are weakened by the fact that information is kept from civil society organizations and media at a time when these institutions can play an effective role in stating the position of nations on major issues that have a direct impact on the livelihood of peoples. |

Oussama Safa, Chief of Participation and Social Justice Section at ESCWA said that the civil movement and peoples calls for social justice imposed new political and social contexts in some countries of the Arab region, where it was adopted by some through the drafting of new social contracts, and avoided or even curbed by others through violence. |
