Regional review of Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action

What:    High-level conference to discuss the Arab region’s priorities for the next five years in the area of gender equality and women’s empowerment, based on an assessment of the progress made and gaps identified in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action 25 years after its adoption. The meeting is expected to conclude with the adoption of a declaration that will reflect the Arab position on the subject, to be presented at the 64th session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women, to be held in New York in March 2020.
 
The conference is organized by ESCWA in partnership with the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Arab Women Organization (AWO).

Opening statements by:
-            The Executive Secretary of ESCWA, Ms. Rola Dashti;
-            The Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka;
-           The Assistant Secretary General of LAS, Ms. Haifa Abu Ghazaleh;
-           The Executive Director of AWO, Ms. Fadia Kiwan.
 
Participants include government officials, and representatives of national women’s machineries, United Nations entities and civil society organizations working in the region.
 
Why:      This high-level conference is the culmination of a comprehensive programme, which was developed and implemented by the partners to review the progress made; gaps identified and challenges faced in the implementation of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for action in the last 5 years. The final document will reaffirm the principles enshrined in the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action and will set the priorities for accelerated action amid the various challenges facing the Arab region.
