Bolster Food and Water Security in the Arab region |
On 11 December 2014, ESCWA and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA) launched of a four-year project to bolster food and water security in the Arab region. SIDA has donated USD 2.7 million while the contribution of ESCWA will amount to USD 0.8 million. The project generates unique national and regional data on the present and future situation of food and water security; design coordinated regional policies to enhance food and water security; and help governments respond to dwindling arable lands and increased water scarcity, while meeting growing food needs. |

Reviewing Arab Development Patterns, Creating Sustainable Development Bodies Urged Arab Regional Preparatory Meeting for Rio+20 Calls for Civil Society Role in Development |
Cairo, 17 Oct 2011 (UN Information Service) — Officials and experts participating in a meeting of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) called for seizing the opportunity of political and social changes of the Arab Spring to review adopted patterns of development with a view to addressing sustainable development challenges in the Arab region. Participants agreed that failures in achieving development is mainly attributed to developed countries’ evasion of their obligations towards developing ones, as provided for in international conventions. |

Democratic Governance in Iraq on the Agenda of ESCWA |
The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) will hold a workshop on 'Capacity-Building for Partnership in Democratic governance in Iraq' in partnership with the Iraqi Business Council (IBC) and in cooperation with the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Arab Gulf Fund for Development (AGFUND) from 23 to 25 January 2015, in the Grand Millennium Hotel, Amman. The opening of the workshop will be attended by Ambassador of Iraq to Jordan Jawad Hadi Abbas. |

Cairo Hosts Tenth Session of ESCWA Statistical Committee |
The Tenth Session of ESCWA Statistical Committee was hosted on 30 and 31 January 2013 at the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics (CAPMAS) in the Egyptian Capital Cairo. The Committee gathered heads of national statistical offices in the ESCWA region, and concerned parties and experts from local and international organizations. |
