ESCWA warns of a historic decline in foreign direct investment in the Arab region due to COVID-19 |
Beirut, 23 April 2020--The devastating effects of COVID-19 on economies worldwide are yet to unfold, but they will definitely not spare the Arab region which is set to witness its greatest decline in foreign direct investment (FDI) on record. A new policy brief issued today by the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) to shed light on the impact of the pandemic on Arab trade and investment estimates that the region is likely to lose 45% of FDI inflows in 2020. |

ESCWA Report Highlights Disparities in Information and Communication Technology |
ESCWA shed light in a report it launched Tuesday on the state of the Information Society in the Arab region, emphasizing the great disparities that exist among countries in the region in this sector. Entitled “Regional Profile of the Information Society in Western Asia – 2009”, the report disclosed an increase in literacy in this region, while also noting that half of all Arab women still suffer from illiteracy. |

In March 2017, ESCWA issued a report on a “Prototype model for Sustainable Development Goal simulation”. The paper analyzes efforts to create a quantitative model that can arbitrate and balance between opposing Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to reach the best combination of targets. |

ESCWA Launches Annual Survey of Economic and Social Developments in its Region |
Beirut, 31 January 2012 (United Nations Information Centre) – A United Nations ESCWA annual survey on the Economic and Social Developments for 2010-2011 was released today, reflecting the dramatic changes the region has witnessed while moving from the first to the second decade of the 21st century. The survey made observations, provided data to understand and explain the dynamics of regional, sub-regional and country-specific social and economic trends. Its objective is to provide a snapshot of the current socioeconomic situation and an outlook for 2012. |
