Regional Profile of the Information Society: the Arabic language sixth among the most used languages on the Internet |
The Internet penetration rate in the Arab region registered a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 21.9 per cent during the period 2005-2012 which is higher than the world average of 12.4 per cent. The forte of ICT infrastructure in the region are dynamic mobile service markets which saw a notable penetration rate CAGR of 21.4 per cent between 2005 and 2012, higher than the global rate at 15.2 per cent. Additionally, as of mid 2013, all Arab countries except three had deployed 3G services. |

The Digital Arabic Content Competitions for 2013 Open the Doors for Digital Products in Arabic |
ESCWA launched the digital Arabic content (DAC) competitions for 2013 between June and September in each of Palestine, Yemen and Lebanon under the slogan “Thinking digital? Let’s innovate in Arabic”. The competitions aimed at selecting the best and most innovative ideas in the field of DAC. They were launched in cooperation with the Palestine Information and Communication Technology Incubator (PICTI) in Palestine, the Science and Technology Centre at the University of Aden in Yemen, and Berytech in Lebanon. |

Negotiations on Climate Change |
ESCWA convened a three-day Regional Training Workshop on Capacity Development for Climate Change Negotiations for the Arab Countries in collaboration with the League of Arab States (LAS) between 26 and 28 May 2014 in Amman. The workshop was the second in a series of workshops on building the capacity of Arab countries on climate change negotiations. |

Boosting Digital Arabic Content – new report examines challenges and opportunities |
The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) and the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UN-ESCWA) launched on June 13th 2014 a joint assessment study entitled "Digital Arabic Content". The launch was during the thematic workshop on "Digital Content for Inclusive Knowledge Society" that took place as part of the WSIS+10 High Level Event, held in Geneva. The report was launched amidst growing regional interest in digital content in general and digital Arabic content (DAC) in specific. |

الإسكوا تمدّ العون الخضراء |
في إطار المشروع الذي تقوده الإسكوا حول " تعزيز القدرات الوطنية على تطوير القطاعات الإنتاجية الخضراء"، والذي استهلّ العمل به رسمياً في شهر نيسان/أبريل 2012، أنشِئت ثلاثة مكاتب لمساندة الإنتاج الأخضر وبدأت بالعمل في عُمان (أيلول/سبتمبر 2012)، ولبنان (حزيران/يونيو 2013) والأردن (آب/أغسطس 2013). وتستضاف هذه المكاتب بالتتابع في وزارة التجارة والصناعة في سلطنة عُمان وفي جمعية الصناعيين اللبنانيين وفي الجمعية العلمية الملكية في الأردن. |
