ESCWA organized a side event on the sidelines of the 14th session of the Conference of States Parties (COSP14) to the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD) under the title of: “Protecting the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Pandemics and Crises". ESCWA held the side event in collaboration with the League of Arab States (Social Affairs Sector), Kuwait’s Ministry of Social Affairs, and the Arab Organization for Persons with Disabilities (AOPD). |

Food Secure Arab World: A Road Map for Policy and Research |
The International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and the Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) organized a conference entitled “Food Secure Arab World: A Road Map for Policy and Research,” in collaboration with the American University of Beirut, the University of Cairo, the Economic Research Forum, the Hassan II Institute of Agronomy and Veterinary Medicine in Rabat, and the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas. The conference took place on 6 and 7 February 2012, in Beirut. |

Regional Workshop on: “Renewable Energy UNDA project conclusions and way forward” |
The objective of this regional workshop is to conclude the UNDA project on “Promoting Renewable Energy Investments for Climate Change Mitigation and Sustainable Development” by providing closing remarks about the implemented activities, an update on the RE projects portfolios from selected UN ESCWA and UNECE Member countries, and indications about the way forward to continue promoting RE investments in the two regions, using available instruments, and particularly, the “Sustainable Energy Marketplace” platform (http://marketplace.irena.org/) developed by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) as one of the main tools that facilitate Access to renewable energy projects in developing countries and identify potential funding sources. Moreover, support was provided by the UNDA project to enhance this platform that will be presented and discussed during the workshop. |

Regional Workshop on the Collection, Elaboration, and Reporting of Human Settlements Indicators in Arab Countries |
The regional workshop aims at strengthening the capacity of staff from national statistical offices, city authorities, local urban observatories and service providers, in: the identification of statistical gaps, collection, classification and analysis of data, and the periodic reporting on selected human settlements indicators; the development of action plans and means to collect data related to the implementation of SDG11; and the development of follow-up mechanisms to serve Arab countries in statistical capacity-building.

EGM Policies for Peace Building and Conflict Prevention in Western Asia |
Countries suffering from conflict or political tension are very much dependent on successful peacebuilding interventions that would be geared towards preventing a relapse into conflict and ensuring sustainable peace and development. Key ingredients for effective interventions in the aftermath of conflict include the provision of basic safety and security, an inclusive political process, the provision of essential services, restoration of core government functions and economic revitalization. |
