| Principal activity | The principal activity is the activity which contributes most to the total value added of the unit under consideration. Ideally, the principal activity of the unit should be determined with reference to the value added to the goods and services produced, by applying the top-down method. The top-down method follows a hierarchical principle: the classification of the unit at the lowest level of the classification must be consistent with the classification of the unit at the higher levels. The principal activity so identified does not necessarily account for 50% or more of the entity's total value added. | stocks of work in progress (industry) | Stocks of work in progress refers to the value of all materials that have been partially processed by the establishment but that are not usually sold, shipped or turned over to other establishments without further processing. Generally, it should include all work in progress for the account of others, irrespective of the arrangements for financing the work. However, that part of the work in progress on long-term contracts for which progress payments have been included under shipments should be excluded. Work in progress on own-account production of machinery and equipment should be included, but partially completed construction work should be excluded.
