The Arab region is highly dependent on fossil fuels as a transport fuel which has one of the highest growth rates of carbon dioxide emissions. Although the use of natural gas vehicles in the Arab region remains limited, there is scope for natural gas to play a significant role in enhancing the sustainability of the transport sector by promoting cleaner fuels.

However, the availability of natural gas is not the only barrier for natural gas vehicles. The Arab governments need to promote adequate domestic energy-pricing policies, energy subsidy reforms, investments in the required gas-distribution infrastructure and refueling stations, public transport and clean environment regulations.
