The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (UNESCWA) will be hosting the Eleventh Meeting of the United Nations Regional Coordination Group on 19-20 June 2006 at the United Nations House, Riadh El Solh Square, Beirut.

The Meeting, which will be opened by UNESCWA Executive Secretary Mervat Tallawy at 5:00 pm on Monday, is intended to coordinate the work of UN Agencies in the region in order to avoid duplication and repetition of their activities.

This year’s meeting will focus on the “2005 World Summit Outcome” where participants will discuss the implications of the Outcome on the work of the United Nations agencies in the Arab region; and the challenges and opportunities for peace and security, human rights and development. The meeting will also focus on the monitoring of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) at the regional level where UNESCWA will make a presentation on the findings, conclusions and recommendations for action and follow-up initiatives. This is in addition to discussing collaborative initiatives in support of the achievement of the MDGs and mechanisms and tools for the United Nations coordination.

Invited to the Meeting are representatives of the regional and national offices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the World Health Organization (WHO), the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS), the World Food Programme (WFP), the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), the World Bank (WB), and the United Nations Information Center (UNIC).

Upon the initiative of UNESCWA and pursuant to a request by the UN Secretary-General and Member States for closer coordination of UN activities, the Regional Interagency Coordination Group (RICG) was established in 1995 to facilitate coordination among UN regional organizations.
