UN-ESCWA, in cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and Global Road Safety Partnership (GRSP), held a workshop on “Capacity-Building of National Focal Points in Preparation for the First UN Road Safety Week” from 20 to 21 December 2006 in Cairo.

The meeting, which was attended by experts in road safety from UN-ESCWA member countries, aimed to enhance knowledge and skills on the use and adaptation of the tool kit developed by the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration, and on the manual for the establishment of National Road Safety Councils. A consensus was sought on joint activities to be implemented by member countries during the first UN Road Safety Week.

Participants concluded with important recommendations, namely: implementing the recommendations of the UN-ESCWA paper on Road Safety Management and reviewing the current situation in member countries with respect to the status of implementation; setting a specific timeframe and work programme for implementing these recommendations based on successful practices in the region such as that of the High Commission for the Development of ArRiyadh, Jordan Traffic Institute, and Bahrain Safety Centre.
