The Beirut-based United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) held a training program on Wednesday and Thursday 10 and 11 August 2016 at the American University of Beirut (AUB), as part of the overall training given to a group of the university students who will participate in Model ESCWA later this fall. The training and initiative are being held in partnership with the AUB Centre for Civic Engagement and Community Service (CCECS).

Over 40 students attended this training, and listened to presentations by Mr. Karim Khalil, ESCWA Secretary of the Commission, Ms. Rasha Salman, Research Assistant in the Office of ESCWA Executive Secretary and Mr. Niranjan Sarangi, First Economic Affairs Officer at ESCWA.

The topics of the lectures included Conference Diplomacy, Writing UN Resolutions; Financing Development in the Arab World; The Regional Dimension of Development and the Role of ESCWA; and The Development Challenges in the Arab World, among others.

Model United Nations (MUN) is a simulation of the UN General Assembly, Security Council, Economic and Social Council and other UN bodies. Over the past decades, Model UN has covered a wide range of UN Funds, Programmes, Agencies, Departments, Commissions and other bodies.
The Model ESCWA targets university students that are interested in experiencing the inner workings and challenges of the United Nations, in this case with a special focus on the ESCWA system and regional priority agenda items. It will simulate ESCWA’s central decision making process, its Ministerial Session, with the aim of having participants agree on a roadmap for the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The partner in this initiative, the CCECS, has aimed since its inception in 2008 to develop a culture of service and civic leadership within the AUB community and provide opportunities for university students, faculty, and staff from all backgrounds to study and respond to social and civic needs.
