2014

The first Arab States Regional South-South Development Expo was held on 18 to 20 February 2014, hosted by the State of Qatar and co-organized by the United Nations Office for South-South Cooperation and the United Nations Development Programme Regional Bureau for Arab States. The Expo bore the motto “Solutions to Action”. The main objective of the Expo was to serve as a platform for matching capacities of the solution providers with the needs of the solution seekers, which will potentially lead to practical exchanges of South-South solutions and experiences in the region. It featured exchange forums led by a number of United Nations specialized agencies, funds and programmes that are active in advancing the South-South cooperation agenda in the Arab States region, including ESCWA, the International Fund for Agriculture (IFAD), the International Labor Organization (ILO), the UN Development Program (UNDP), the UN Environment Program (UNEP) , the UN Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and UN-Women. As part of the Expo, ESCWA’s Solution Forum focused on the presentation of replicable solutions for promoting energy efficiency and renewable energy at the local level, and to highlight efforts at the regional level to develop Arab MDG+?? Indicators on Water Supply and Sanitation, which could be replicated in other policy areas, such as energy efficiency. The UNEP-ESCWA Solutions Forum on Green Economy consisted of two parts. The first session presented four solutions, each seeking to provide environmentally sound solutions for sustainable development and growth. The second session focused on “Opportunities and Innovation for South-South Development Cooperation for Sustainable Development in the Arab Region". Panelists included a youth innovator and green economy advocates from the region to expand on ongoing activities and future opportunities in the Arab region and beyond. Moreover, ESCWA participated in a special session on “Launching a Regional Dialogue on Energy, Water and Food Security”, organized by the Department of Environment, Housing, Water Resources, and Sustainable Development at the League of Arab States (LAS) as a kick off of a regional dialogue on the Energy, Water and Food Security nexus in the Arab region.
